Overview
Xin Nuo Ming (新诺明) is a Chinese trade name for the antibacterial combination of sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim, commonly known as co-trimoxazole. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide that inhibits the bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA). Trimethoprim is a pyrimidine inhibitor of dihydrofolate reductase, which prevents the reduction of dihydrofolic acid to tetrahydrofolic acid. Together, these two agents produce a synergistic effect by blocking two consecutive steps in the bacterial biosynthesis of essential nucleic acids and proteins. This combination is used to treat a wide range of bacterial infections, including urinary tract infections, acute otitis media, and shigellosis, and is a primary treatment for Pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia. Shanghai New Asia Pharmaceutical Minhang Co., Ltd. is a key developer and manufacturer of this product in China.
