Overview

Balsoprim is a fixed-dose combination drug product developed by SIT (Desma Laboratorio Farmacéutico) containing three active ingredients: sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and bromhexine hydrochloride. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim are small-molecule antibiotics that act synergistically to inhibit bacterial folate synthesis. Sulfamethoxazole acts as an inhibitor of dihydropteroate synthase, while trimethoprim inhibits dihydrofolate reductase, creating a sequential blockade that halts bacterial DNA synthesis. Bromhexine hydrochloride is a mucolytic agent that reduces the viscosity of mucus secretions in the respiratory tract, facilitating the clearance of airways. The combination is approved and marketed in Spain for the treatment of respiratory tract infections where both antimicrobial and mucolytic actions are required, such as acute bronchitis and other bacterial respiratory infections.
