This is a combination of three antibiotics—sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and cefaclor. Sulfamethoxazole is a sulfonamide antibiotic that inhibits bacterial synthesis of dihydrofolic acid by competing with para-aminobenzoic acid. Trimethoprim inhibits bacterial dihydrofolate reductase, blocking the production of tetrahydrofolic acid. Together, sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim act synergistically to block sequential steps in folate synthesis, resulting in bactericidal activity[7][9]. Cefaclor is a second-generation cephalosporin antibiotic that kills bacteria by inhibiting cell wall synthesis[6][8][10]. This combination would theoretically provide broad-spectrum antibacterial coverage against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative organisms through dual mechanisms—disruption of folate metabolism and inhibition of cell wall formation.
