Overview

This drug is a **fixed-dose combination** of three active pharmaceutical ingredients: **sulfamethoxazole**, an antibacterial sulfonamide; **trimethoprim**, a dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor antibiotic; and **guaifenesin**, an expectorant. The combination is used, particularly in some countries like Peru, for the treatment of **acute bronchitis** and other acute respiratory tract infections. Sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim act synergistically to inhibit successive steps of bacterial folic acid synthesis, providing bactericidal activity against a broad spectrum of susceptible bacteria. Guaifenesin acts as an expectorant to decrease the viscosity of bronchial secretions, easing productive cough. The use of this combination for acute bronchitis is controversial since most cases are viral, but it remains in routine practice in certain regions and populations[1][3][7].
