Sulfated rhamnose polysaccharides chromium(III) complex (SRPC) is a novel research-stage bioactive coordination compound synthesized by chelating sulfated rhamnose polysaccharides—extracted from the green alga *Enteromorpha prolifera*—with chromium(III) ions. It is primarily investigated for its potential in treating type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), where it has demonstrated significant hypoglycemic and hypolipidemic effects in preclinical mouse models. SRPC works by activating the insulin signaling pathway, specifically the IR/IRS-2/PI3K/PKB/GSK-3β axis, which enhances glycogen synthesis and promotes the translocation of glucose transporter 4 (GLUT4) in skeletal muscle to improve glucose uptake. Preclinical data indicate that oral administration of SRPC can improve glucose tolerance, reduce body mass gain, and lower serum insulin levels.
