Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Sulfur + salicylic acid is a topical combination product consisting of two small molecule keratolytic agents. Sulfur provides mild antibacterial and antifungal properties and helps to dry the skin and absorb excess oil. Salicylic acid, a beta-hydroxy acid (BHA), works by increasing the amount of moisture in the skin and dissolving the intercellular cement that causes skin cells to clump together, thereby facilitating the shedding of dead cells from the stratum corneum. This combination is widely available without a prescription in various formulations, including shampoos, soaps, and topical creams, for the treatment of acne vulgaris, seborrheic dermatitis, dandruff, and psoriasis. It is particularly effective for conditions characterized by hyperkeratosis and oily skin.
