Drug intelligence / Profile preview
sulphur hexafluoride + gadopentetate dimeglumine is a diagnostic combination of two distinct contrast agents used in multimodal medical imaging, particularly for the characterization of focal liver lesions. Sulfur hexafluoride is a microbubble contrast agent composed of a sulfur hexafluoride gas core encapsulated in a phospholipid shell; it is administered intravenously to enhance acoustic backscatter in contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS), providing real-time hemodynamic information. Gadopentetate dimeglumine is a paramagnetic gadolinium-based contrast agent (GBCA) that shortens the T1 and T2 relaxation times of water protons, thereby enhancing signal intensity in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). The combined or sequential use of these agents allows for a comprehensive diagnostic assessment, integrating the real-time vascularity data from CEUS with the high-resolution tissue characterization and extracellular space evaluation provided by MRI, which is particularly valuable in differentiating hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) from benign lesions like focal nodular hyperplasia (FNH).
