Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Superoxide dismutase + plant extracts is a combination product that typically includes the antioxidant enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) and a blend of plant-derived oils or extracts. SOD is an endogenous enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of superoxide radicals to hydrogen peroxide and oxygen, thereby reducing oxidative stress in tissues. Plant extracts commonly included are blackcurrant seed oil, sunflower oil concentrate, and balloon vine extract. This combination has been formulated as topical creams for inflammatory skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis, leveraging both the anti-inflammatory properties of SOD and the emollient/anti-inflammatory effects of specific plant oils. The mechanism involves direct scavenging of reactive oxygen species (ROS), reduction in proinflammatory cytokine production, and enhancement of skin barrier function[1][6]. Some oral formulations use SOD-rich melon extract combined with carriers like gliadin to improve bioavailability; these have been studied for systemic antioxidant effects[2][8]. The primary indications explored include atopic dermatitis (topical) and general oxidative stress-related conditions (oral).
