Overview
Systane + Optive refers to a comparative clinical study context conducted by the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to evaluate the efficacy of two distinct over-the-counter artificial tear products in patients with dry eye syndrome (keratoconjunctivitis sicca). Systane, manufactured by Alcon, is a lubricant eye drop containing polyethylene glycol 400 and propylene glycol; it utilizes a unique hydroxypropyl guar (HP-guar) gelling agent that forms a protective, bioadhesive gel on the ocular surface. Optive, manufactured by AbbVie (formerly Allergan), is a dual-action lubricant containing carboxymethylcellulose sodium and glycerin, which provides both surface lubrication and osmoprotection to the corneal epithelium. The UTSW trial was a randomized crossover study designed to compare the maintenance of tear film stability and evaporation rates between these two commercially available formulations.
