Overview

This combination therapy consists of tacrolimus, steroids (such as methylprednisolone or prednisone), and mycophenolate mofetil, used as an immunosuppressive regimen to prevent organ rejection in pediatric liver transplant recipients. Tacrolimus acts as a calcineurin inhibitor, steroids provide broad anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive effects via glucocorticoid receptor modulation, and mycophenolate mofetil inhibits lymphocyte proliferation by targeting inosine monophosphate dehydrogenase. This specific triple-drug protocol was evaluated by the Children's Memorial Health Institute in Poland to determine if the addition of mycophenolate mofetil allows for the early termination of steroid therapy while maintaining efficacy in preventing graft rejection.
