Drug intelligence / Profile preview
XAF5 Gel is a topical formulation of tafluprost, a synthetic prostaglandin F2α (PGF2α) analog, developed for the non-invasive reduction of localized subcutaneous fat. Originally developed by Topokine Therapeutics and later acquired by Allergan (now AbbVie), XAF5 targets the prostaglandin F (FP) receptor. Activation of this receptor on adipocytes inhibits adipogenesis—the process by which pre-adipocytes differentiate into mature, fat-storing cells—and reduces lipid accumulation in existing adipocytes. The drug was primarily investigated in Phase 2 clinical trials for the treatment of submental fat (double chin) and steatoblepharon (prominent lower eyelid fat pads), offering a potential topical alternative to injectable or surgical fat reduction procedures.
