Overview

Tamaril is a phytotherapeutic combination product developed by Marjan Industria e Comercio ltda for the treatment of functional intestinal constipation. The formulation consists of several herbal extracts, including *Senna alexandrina* (Senna), *Cassia fistula* (Golden Shower), *Tamarindus indica* (Tamarind), *Coriandrum sativum* (Coriander), and *Periandra mediterranea* (Brazilian Licorice). The primary active constituents are sennosides derived from Senna and Cassia, which function as stimulant laxatives. Upon ingestion, sennosides are converted by colonic bacteria into active metabolites like rheinanthrone, which stimulate the myenteric plexus, increase intestinal peristalsis, and alter electrolyte transport to increase water secretion into the bowel. Tamaril has been evaluated in Phase III clinical trials (e.g., NCT00990951) and is approved for use in patients with functional constipation in Brazil.
