Overview
TANDEM + idarubicin is a combination therapy used for transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). It consists of TANDEM microspheres, which are precisely calibrated, drug-loadable embolic beads manufactured by Boston Scientific, loaded with idarubicin, an anthracycline chemotherapeutic agent marketed as Zavedos by Pfizer. The TANDEM beads serve as a drug delivery platform that provides physical embolization to induce ischemia in the tumor while simultaneously delivering a localized, sustained release of idarubicin. Idarubicin works by intercalating into DNA and inhibiting DNA topoisomerase II, leading to tumor cell death. This specific combination has been evaluated in clinical studies led by the University Hospital, Montpellier, demonstrating high objective response rates and improved survival outcomes in well-selected HCC patients.
