Overview

Tart cherry + citrate, also known as the TaCCi mixture, is a combination dietary supplement formulated to support urine alkalization and reduce serum urate levels in patients with gout. The mixture combines tart cherry (Prunus cerasus) extract or powder—known for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties—with a citrate salt blend. Tart cherries are rich in polyphenols, particularly anthocyanins, which may help reduce inflammation and oxidative stress. Citrate salts are commonly used to alkalinize urine and lower uric acid crystallization risk. In clinical studies among men with gout initiating urate-lowering therapy, the TaCCi mixture demonstrated similar efficacy to standard citrate mixtures and sodium bicarbonate for increasing urine pH and lowering serum urate levels. Notably, the TaCCi group showed greater improvements in markers of renal protection (urine albumin/creatinine ratio) and systemic inflammation (C-reactive protein), suggesting potential added benefits from tart cherry supplementation beyond those provided by citrate alone[1][2][6]. The safety profile was comparable across all groups studied.
