taurolidine + sodium citrate

AAT-023 (Zuragen) is an antimicrobial and anticoagulant catheter lock solution developed by Ash Access Technology. It is a combination product consisting of taurolidine (1.35%) and sodium citrate (4%). The solution is designed to be instilled into the lumen of tunneled chronic central venous catheters between dialysis sessions to prevent catheter-related bloodstream infections (CRBSI) and maintain catheter patency in patients with end-stage renal disease. Taurolidine provides broad-spectrum bactericidal and fungicidal activity by reacting with bacterial cell wall components, while sodium citrate acts as an anticoagulant by chelating calcium ions required for the coagulation cascade. A pivotal Phase III trial (NCT00123526) comparing AAT-023 to heparin was terminated due to a lack of funding by the sponsor.
