Tdap-IPV is a combination vaccine designed to provide booster immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough), and poliomyelitis. It contains tetanus and diphtheria toxoids, acellular pertussis antigens (such as pertussis toxoid, filamentous hemagglutinin, and pertactin), and inactivated poliovirus types 1, 2, and 3. In the specific context of the "Tdap + IPV-Emory University-HIV infection" study (NCT02589678), this licensed vaccine was utilized as a proxy in a Phase 4 Simulated Vaccine Efficacy Trial (SiVET) conducted in Lusaka and Ndola, Zambia. The study, led by Emory University, aimed to evaluate the feasibility of recruiting and retaining high-risk, HIV-negative women for future HIV vaccine trials by mimicking the schedule and procedures of such trials using standard, non-HIV vaccines.
