Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Tea tree oil + chamomile oil is a topical combination of two essential oils—tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) and chamomile (Matricaria recutita or Chamaemelum nobile)—used primarily in over-the-counter skin care products. Tea tree oil is known for its antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, and anti-inflammatory properties. It acts by disrupting microbial cell membranes and inhibiting inflammatory mediators such as TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-10, prostaglandin E2, and reactive oxygen species production[3][4][5]. Chamomile oil contains compounds with anti-inflammatory and mild antimicrobial effects but generally exhibits weaker antibacterial activity compared to tea tree or other essential oils[9]. The combination is marketed for skin protection (anti-bacterial), itch relief (anti-itchy), wound healing support, eczema therapy, acne management, minor cuts/scrapes/burns care, and general soothing of irritated skin[1][2][3]. There are no FDA-approved therapeutic indications for this combination; it is available as an unapproved OTC product.
