Technetium(99mTc) N-pyridoxyl-5-methyltryptophan is a **radiopharmaceutical** used in hepatobiliary scintigraphy as a diagnostic imaging agent for liver and biliary tract diseases. It acts as an effective radiotracer among (99mTc)-pyridoxylaminates, allowing noninvasive visualization and quantification of hepatobiliary transporter function through emission of gamma radiation detected by SPECT imaging. Its hepatic uptake is mediated by organic anion transporting polypeptide 1B1 (OATP1B1) and OATP1B3, while its biliary excretion involves multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1) and multidrug resistance-associated protein 2 (MRP2). The compound is not metabolized in the human liver and enables assessment of drug pharmacokinetics and liver/biliary health. Developed and marketed in Japan since 1984.
