Technetium (99mTc) albumin nanocolloid (marketed as Nanocoll) is a radiopharmaceutical imaging agent consisting of human serum albumin nanocolloids radiolabeled with the gamma-emitting isotope technetium-99m. The particles range in size from 5 to 80 nm, a specification that optimizes their transport through the lymphatic system. Following peritumoral, intradermal, or subcutaneous injection, the nanocolloid particles are drained by lymphatic vessels and sequestered by macrophages and histiomonocytic cells within the sentinel lymph nodes. This mechanism enables preoperative scintigraphic imaging and intraoperative localization using a gamma probe, primarily for sentinel lymph node mapping in breast cancer and melanoma. It is also utilized for bone marrow scintigraphy and the imaging of inflammatory processes.
