Technetium (99mTc) phytate (often prepared or formulated as a calcium phytate colloid) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical used for scintigraphic imaging of the liver, spleen, and lymphatic system. Upon intravenous injection, the non-colloidal phytate complex chelates with endogenous calcium ions in the blood to form an insoluble microcolloid in vivo. Alternatively, it can be pre-mixed with calcium (as in the Radpharm Colloid kit) to form a calcium phytate colloid prior to injection. These colloidal particles are rapidly cleared from the circulation via phagocytosis by the cells of the reticuloendothelial system (RES), primarily Kupffer cells in the liver and macrophages in the spleen, allowing for high-contrast SPECT imaging of these organs. It is also utilized intradermally for sentinel lymph node mapping in cancers such as breast cancer.
