Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Technetium (99mTc) red blood cells (commercially prepared using kits such as UltraTag RBC) is an autologous, radiolabeled blood-pool imaging agent. It is prepared in vitro by collecting a patient's autologous red blood cells, exposing them to stannous chloride to allow intracellular accumulation of stannous ions, and then adding sodium pertechnetate Tc-99m. The pertechnetate is reduced intracellularly, trapping the radioactive technetium-99m within the erythrocytes. Once reinjected intravenously, these tagged red blood cells remain within the intravascular space, allowing for gamma scintigraphic imaging. It is primarily indicated for cardiac blood pool imaging (including first-pass and gated equilibrium studies) and for the detection and localization of gastrointestinal bleeding sites.
