Overview

Technetium-99m + diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (commonly referred to as Tc‑99m DTPA or technetium tc 99m pentetate) is a radiopharmaceutical used in nuclear medicine for diagnostic imaging. It consists of the radioisotope technetium‑99m chelated with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA). The compound is primarily used for renal imaging to assess glomerular filtration rate, but it is also indicated for brain and lung imaging. After intravenous administration, it is distributed in the vascular compartment and cleared exclusively by glomerular filtration, making it useful for direct measurement of kidney function. When administered via inhalation, it deposits on alveolar epithelium and enables assessment of lung ventilation. The agent accumulates in areas with altered blood-brain barrier or neovascularity during brain scans[1][2][4][5][7].
