A dual-tracer diagnostic combination consisting of the radiopharmaceutical technetium-99m sulfur colloid and the visual dye methylene blue. This combination is utilized for sentinel lymph node (SLN) mapping in patients with early-stage gastric cancer. The technetium-99m sulfur colloid is injected endoscopically into the peritumoral submucosa prior to surgery, allowing for the detection of sentinel nodes using a gamma probe. Methylene blue is injected intraoperatively to provide a visual guide to the lymphatic basins. This approach, studied by the McGill University Health Centre, is designed to identify patients with a low risk of nodal metastasis who may be candidates for organ-sparing surgical techniques rather than traditional radical gastrectomy with extensive lymphadenectomy.
