Tegafur + pirarubicin + ifosfamide is a combination chemotherapy regimen, sometimes referred to as "CAF," used primarily in the treatment of breast cancer. Tegafur is a prodrug of fluorouracil (5-FU), which acts as an antimetabolite by inhibiting thymidylate synthase and thereby interfering with DNA synthesis[5]. Pirarubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates into DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, leading to DNA strand breaks. Ifosfamide is an alkylating agent that forms DNA crosslinks, inhibiting protein and DNA synthesis[2][6]. This combination targets rapidly dividing cancer cells through multiple mechanisms affecting nucleic acid function and integrity. The regimen has been studied for its effects on reproductive health in women with breast cancer[8].
