Overview

Telaprevir + etravirine is a combination of two antiviral drugs, each with distinct mechanisms of action and primary indications. Telaprevir is a direct-acting antiviral agent classified as an NS3/4A protease inhibitor, developed for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, particularly genotype 1. It works by inhibiting the HCV NS3/4A serine protease, an enzyme essential for viral replication[2][6]. Etravirine is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI) used in combination antiretroviral therapy for HIV-1 infection. It acts by directly binding to and inhibiting the reverse transcriptase enzyme of HIV-1, thereby blocking viral DNA synthesis[5]. The combination may be considered in patients co-infected with HCV and HIV; however, pharmacokinetic studies indicate that while telaprevir slightly decreases its own exposure when coadministered with etravirine, no clinically significant dose adjustments are necessary[8].
