Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Telaprevir + peginterferon alfa-2a + ribavirin** is a triple combination antiviral regimen used in the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, predominantly genotype 1, in adults. Telaprevir is an HCV NS3/4A protease inhibitor that blocks viral replication by inhibiting a critical viral enzyme[3]. Peginterferon alfa-2a is a long-acting form of recombinant interferon alpha, which stimulates the immune system to fight HCV[3]. Ribavirin is a nucleoside analogue antiviral that enhances the effect of interferon and helps suppress viral replication[3]. The combination was developed to increase sustained virologic response (SVR) rates compared to peginterferon/ribavirin dual therapy, though it has been supplanted by direct-acting antivirals with improved safety and efficacy profiles[6].
