Telocyte's telomerase gene therapy is an investigational regenerative treatment for Alzheimer's disease, currently in the preclinical stage. Developed by Telocyte, the therapy utilizes a viral vector (typically AAV) to deliver the human telomerase reverse transcriptase (hTERT) gene directly to neurons and glial cells within the central nervous system. The primary objective is to relengthen critically short telomeres, thereby reversing cellular senescence—a state of functional decline and pro-inflammatory signaling that contributes to neurodegeneration. By resetting the cellular aging clock, the therapy aims to restore cellular health, improve metabolic function, and halt or reverse the progression of Alzheimer's disease pathology.
