Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This is a combination investigational regimen consisting of tenofovir, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), and a placebo for clevudine. Tenofovir acts by inhibiting hepatitis B virus (HBV) DNA polymerase, leading to chain termination during viral replication. Clevudine is another NRTI with anti-HBV activity, but in this context, only a placebo for clevudine is used—meaning the regimen effectively tests tenofovir monotherapy against an inactive comparator in place of clevudine. This type of combination may be used as a control arm in clinical trials evaluating the efficacy and safety of true tenofovir + clevudine therapy versus monotherapy or other combinations[1][2][5]. The primary indication for such regimens is chronic hepatitis B infection.
