Drug intelligence / Profile preview
tenofovir + emtricitabine is a fixed-dose combination of two antiretroviral medications: tenofovir, a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NtRTI), and emtricitabine, a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI). Distributed by Salud Pharma, this combination is indicated for the treatment of HIV-1 infection in adults and pediatric patients, typically as part of a multi-drug regimen, and for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to reduce the risk of sexually acquired HIV-1 infection in high-risk individuals. Both components work by competing with natural substrates for incorporation into viral DNA by the HIV reverse transcriptase enzyme, causing premature DNA chain termination and effectively halting viral replication. This combination is a cornerstone of modern antiretroviral therapy (ART) and PrEP programs globally.
