Overview

Tenofovir + levonorgestrel is an investigational combination drug delivered via an intravaginal ring (IVR) designed for dual prevention of HIV infection and unintended pregnancy in women. Tenofovir is a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI) that blocks HIV replication by inhibiting the viral reverse transcriptase enzyme, while levonorgestrel is a synthetic progestogen that acts as an agonist of the progesterone receptor to suppress ovulation and alter cervical mucus, thereby preventing pregnancy. The combination IVR aims to provide sustained local delivery of both agents for up to 90 days, offering simultaneous protection against HIV and as a contraceptive. This product has been studied in Phase 1 and Phase 2 clinical trials for safety, pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, tolerability, and acceptability among women[3][8]. **Developers:** Northwest University
