Drug intelligence / Profile preview
This drug is a fixed-dose combination antiretroviral medication used for the treatment of HIV/AIDS. It contains three active ingredients: tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (a nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitor), emtricitabine (a nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor), and efavirenz (a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor). The combination acts by inhibiting the action of HIV reverse transcriptase, an enzyme crucial for viral replication. This regimen is taken orally once daily and was originally marketed under the brand name Atripla. It can be used as a complete regimen or in combination with other antiretrovirals[1][3][5][6]. The product was developed through a joint venture between Bristol-Myers Squibb and Gilead Sciences[8]. While it cannot cure HIV/AIDS, it helps suppress viral load, improve immune function, and reduce transmission risk.
