Tetanus toxoid is a formaldehyde-inactivated toxin (toxoid) derived from the bacterium *Clostridium tetani*. It is used to induce active immunity against tetanus (lockjaw) by stimulating the production of specific IgG antitoxins that neutralize the native tetanus toxin. The toxoid is typically adsorbed onto aluminum salts, such as aluminum hydroxide or aluminum phosphate, to enhance its immunogenicity. While it can be administered as a standalone vaccine for booster doses, it is most commonly found as a core component of various combination vaccines, including DTaP (diphtheria, tetanus, and acellular pertussis), Tdap, and pediatric hexavalent vaccines like Pediarix and Vaxelis. It is a fundamental part of standard pediatric and adult immunization schedules worldwide.
