Tetanus toxoid + hepatitis A vaccine refers to the co-administration of two distinct vaccines in a clinical research setting, specifically evaluated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID). Tetanus toxoid is an inactivated toxin (toxoid) derived from *Clostridium tetani*, designed to elicit protective antitoxin antibodies. The hepatitis A vaccine used in this context is an inactivated whole-virus vaccine intended to prevent infection by the hepatitis A virus (HAV). In the NIAID-sponsored study (NCT00001104), these vaccines were utilized as immunogenic probes to assess the functional recovery of the immune system in HIV-infected children and young adults following the initiation or modification of highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART). The study aimed to determine if the quantitative increase in CD4+ T-cells observed during HAART translated into qualitative improvements in the response to both recall antigens (tetanus) and neoantigens (hepatitis A).
