Overview
Tdap is a combination vaccine used for active booster immunization against tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis (whooping cough). It is specifically formulated for adolescents and adults, containing a reduced amount of diphtheria toxoid and acellular pertussis antigens compared to the pediatric DTaP vaccine (indicated by the lowercase 'd' and 'p'). The vaccine works by inducing the production of neutralizing antibodies against the toxins produced by *Clostridium tetani* and *Corynebacterium diphtheriae*, as well as against various components of *Bordetella pertussis*. In clinical research, such as the VA-sponsored TDAP2 trial (NCT02261961), Tdap is frequently employed as a standardized immunological challenge to evaluate the efficacy of interventions, such as nutritional supplements or exercise, on the aging immune system's ability to generate a protective response.
