Overview

This is a combination drug consisting of tetracycline, a broad-spectrum antibiotic, and triamcinolone acetonide, a synthetic corticosteroid. Tetracycline acts by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis through binding to the 30S ribosomal subunit, thereby preventing the growth and proliferation of susceptible bacteria. Triamcinolone acetonide exerts anti-inflammatory, antipruritic, and immunosuppressive effects by modulating gene expression via glucocorticoid receptors. The combination is used topically (e.g., ointment) for inflammatory skin conditions where secondary bacterial infection or colonization (such as with Staphylococcus aureus) may be present or suspected. Clinical studies have shown that adding tetracycline to triamcinolone acetonide ointment can reduce skin colonization by S. aureus in patients with atopic dermatitis but does not significantly improve clinical disease severity compared to corticosteroid alone[1][2]. This combination may also be compounded for veterinary use in otic preparations.
