Overview

Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and cannabinol (CBN) are cannabinoids derived from the *Cannabis sativa* plant. THC is the primary psychoactive constituent and acts as a partial agonist at the cannabinoid CB1 and CB2 receptors. CBN is a non-enzymatic oxidation product of THC; it possesses a lower affinity for CB1 and CB2 receptors compared to THC but is frequently utilized for its purported sedative effects. The combination is primarily developed and marketed within the medical cannabis industry for the management of insomnia and sleep disturbances, leveraging a potential synergistic effect often referred to as the entourage effect to promote sleep without the high intensity of THC alone. While not currently an FDA-approved pharmaceutical drug product, standardized formulations are widely available in legal medical cannabis markets.
