Overview

This research compound is a combination of the phytocannabinoid tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and the terpenes myrcene and beta-caryophyllene, currently under investigation by the UCLA Cannabis Research Initiative. Led by Dr. Ziva Cooper, the study explores the entourage effect, specifically whether these terpenes can enhance the analgesic properties of THC while potentially mitigating its adverse effects. THC primarily acts as a partial agonist at the CB1 and CB2 cannabinoid receptors. Beta-caryophyllene is a sesquiterpene that functions as a selective CB2 receptor agonist, while myrcene is a monoterpene hypothesized to interact with CB1 receptors and TRPV1 channels. The combination is being evaluated in a Phase 1 clinical trial for pain management using vaporized administration.
