Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Thallium (201Tl) chloride (also known as thallous chloride Tl 201) is a diagnostic radiopharmaceutical used in nuclear medicine for myocardial perfusion imaging (MPI) to diagnose coronary artery disease, evaluate myocardial viability, and localize myocardial infarction. It is also utilized for the localization of parathyroid hyperactivity (such as parathyroid adenomas) and in tumor imaging. As a potassium analog, thallium-201 is actively transported into viable myocardial cells via the sodium/potassium-transporting ATPase (Na+/K+-ATPase) pump, with its intracellular accumulation being proportional to regional blood flow and cell viability. Areas of ischemia or infarction exhibit reduced uptake, which can be visualized using single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) or planar scintigraphy. Originally developed at Brookhaven National Laboratory and first commercialized by New England Nuclear (later DuPont, Bristol Myers Squibb, and Lantheus), thallium (201Tl) chloride is currently manufactured and supplied by companies such as Curium and PDRadiopharma.
