Theaflavin-3'-gallate is a polyphenolic compound and a theaflavin derivative found in black tea, produced via enzymatic oxidation of catechins during tea processing. It exhibits significant antioxidant, antiviral, and anticancer properties in vitro. Reported mechanisms include inhibition of ovarian and oral carcinoma cell proliferation (by inducing apoptosis and impairing angiogenesis), and potent reactive oxygen species scavenging. Theaflavin-3'-gallate also shows antiviral activity against the SARS-CoV-2 main protease (Mpro), significantly reducing replication of the virus in vitro. It is studied as a natural agent with potential use in oncology and antiviral research[1][3][5][12][13].
