Overview

Therapeutic autologous lymphocytes refer to an experimental adoptive cell therapy developed by the Barbara Ann Karmanos Cancer Institute for the treatment of high-grade brain tumors, including recurrent or refractory cases. This personalized immunotherapy involves harvesting a patient's own lymphocytes (white blood cells), which are then processed and re-infused into the patient to mount an immune response against malignant cells. In clinical protocols, this therapy is typically administered as part of a complex multi-modal regimen that includes high-dose lymphodepleting chemotherapy (such as cyclophosphamide, cisplatin, and carmustine) and stem cell transplantation to create a favorable environment for the infused cells. The regimen often incorporates an autologous tumor cell vaccine and aldesleukin (interleukin-2) to further stimulate and maintain the activity of the therapeutic lymphocytes within the central nervous system.
