Overview

This micronutrient combination, comprising thiamine (B1), riboflavin (B2), pyridoxine (B6), niacin (B3), cobalamin (B12), ascorbic acid (C), and tocopherol (E), was developed and evaluated by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) as a supportive therapy for patients with pulmonary tuberculosis. In a landmark randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (NCT00197704) conducted in Tanzania, this regimen was administered to both HIV-infected and HIV-negative adults starting TB chemotherapy. The intervention aims to correct nutritional deficiencies, enhance immune competence, and mitigate oxidative stress. Clinical findings demonstrated that the supplementation significantly reduced the risk of TB recurrence and mortality, particularly in patients co-infected with HIV. The vitamins in this combination function as essential metabolic cofactors and systemic antioxidants.
