Overview

ThisCART19A is an autologous CD19-targeted chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T-cell therapy being developed by the Institute of Hematology & Blood Diseases Hospital, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences. The therapy is designed to treat relapsed or refractory autoimmune hemolytic anemia (AIHA) by targeting and depleting CD19-positive B cells, which are the precursors to the plasma cells that produce pathogenic autoantibodies against red blood cells. The treatment process involves the ex vivo genetic modification of a patient's own T cells to express a CAR specific for the CD19 antigen. Following lymphodepleting chemotherapy with fludarabine and cyclophosphamide, the engineered cells are re-infused into the patient to induce a deep depletion of the B-cell compartment, thereby halting the autoimmune process. It is currently under investigation in Phase 1 clinical trials for patients who have failed multiple prior lines of therapy.
