This combination therapy consists of thymalfasin (Thymosin alpha 1), a synthetic 28-amino acid peptide immunomodulator, administered alongside standard-of-care chemotherapy and platinum-based agents (such as cisplatin or carboplatin). Developed by SciClone Pharmaceuticals, thymalfasin acts as an immune system enhancer by potentiating cytokine action and improving T-cell function. In patients with metastatic EGFR wild-type non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), this combination is intended to reduce chemotherapy-induced lymphopenia and hematological toxicity while potentially improving progression-free survival by boosting the host's immune response against the tumor. The platinum agents in the regimen function by forming DNA cross-links, thereby inhibiting DNA replication and inducing apoptosis in cancer cells.
