Overview

Thymalfasin (thymosin alpha 1) is a synthetic 28-amino acid polypeptide originally isolated from the thymus, with immunomodulatory properties. It enhances T-cell production and maturation, stimulates Th1 cytokine production (including interferon-gamma and interleukin-2), increases natural killer cell activity, and modulates immune responses. Thymalfasin is used to treat conditions involving immune dysfunction or suppression, such as hepatitis B and C, certain cancers, HIV infection, chemotherapy-induced immunosuppression, and has been explored for use in COVID-19[6][8]. Peginterferon alfa-2a is a recombinant form of human interferon alpha conjugated to polyethylene glycol to prolong its half-life. It acts by binding type I interferon receptors on cells to stimulate antiviral responses via the JAK/STAT pathway. This leads to increased expression of antiviral proteins that inhibit viral replication. Peginterferon alfa-2a is primarily indicated for chronic hepatitis B and C infections in adults and children with evidence of liver damage[1][3][5]. The combination of these two agents would theoretically provide both direct antiviral effects (peginterferon alfa-2a) and enhanced immune modulation (thymalfasin), though this specific combination does not have a widely established indication.
