Overview

Thyme extract + ammonium chloride is a classic herbal-chemical combination therapy used primarily as an expectorant for the treatment of coughs associated with acute and chronic respiratory diseases. The formulation combines the botanical properties of *Thymus vulgaris* with the saline expectorant effects of ammonium chloride. Thyme extract, rich in volatile oils such as thymol and carvacrol, exerts secretolytic, antispasmodic, and antimicrobial effects, facilitating the thinning of mucus and relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle. Ammonium chloride acts as a reflex expectorant by mildly irritating the gastric mucosa, which triggers a vagal reflex that increases the production of liquid bronchial secretions. This dual action reduces the viscosity of phlegm and enhances mucociliary clearance, making it easier for patients to expectorate. It is most commonly found in syrup form and has been a staple of pharmacopoeias in Eastern Europe and Central Asia for decades.
