Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Porcine desiccated thyroid extract (DTE), also known as natural desiccated thyroid (NDT), is an animal-derived thyroid hormone replacement therapy prepared from the dried and powdered thyroid glands of pigs (porcine). It contains a natural mixture of the active thyroid hormones thyroxine (T4) and triiodothyronine (T3), typically in an approximate 4:1 ratio, along with other thyroid gland constituents such as thyroglobulin, diiodothyronine (T2), and monoiodothyronine (T1). DTE is primarily prescribed for the treatment of hypothyroidism, euthyroid goiters, thyroid nodules, chronic lymphocytic thyroiditis (Hashimoto's), and for thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) suppression in the management of thyroid cancer. Although it has been used clinically since the late 19th century and predates the modern FDA approval process, it remains a widely utilized alternative for patients who do not achieve optimal symptom relief with synthetic levothyroxine (T4) monotherapy.
