Overview

Sernova's autologous thyroid cell therapy is a regenerative medicine approach designed to treat hypothyroidism, particularly in patients who have undergone a total thyroidectomy for benign conditions such as goiter. The procedure involves harvesting healthy thyroid tissue from the patient during surgery, isolating the functional thyroid cells, and subsequently transplanting them into the Sernova Cell Pouch—a proprietary, pre-vascularized, implantable medical device. The Cell Pouch provides a protected, oxygen-rich environment that facilitates the engraftment and long-term survival of the cells. Once established, these autologous cells are intended to function as a "bio-organ," secreting thyroid hormones (T3 and T4) into the systemic circulation to restore normal metabolic function and potentially eliminate the need for daily synthetic hormone replacement therapy.
