Overview

Ticlav is a branded generic combination antibiotic consisting of ticarcillin sodium, a semi-synthetic carboxypenicillin, and clavulanate potassium, a beta-lactamase inhibitor. Developed and manufactured by Navesta Pharmaceuticals, it is formulated as a dry powder for injection (specifically the 3.2g formulation containing 3g of ticarcillin and 0.2g of clavulanate). Ticarcillin exerts its bactericidal effect by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis through binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). Clavulanate acts as a suicide inhibitor of beta-lactamase enzymes, protecting ticarcillin from enzymatic degradation and extending its spectrum of activity to include beta-lactamase-producing strains of Gram-negative and Gram-positive bacteria, including *Pseudomonas aeruginosa*. It is indicated for the treatment of moderate to severe bacterial infections such as septicemia, lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections, and skin and skin structure infections.
