Overview

Ticarcillin + tobramycin is a combination of two antibiotics used primarily for the treatment of serious bacterial infections, especially those caused by Pseudomonas aeruginosa and other Gram-negative organisms. Ticarcillin is a semisynthetic penicillin (β-lactam antibiotic) that inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins, leading to cell lysis and death. Tobramycin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that binds irreversibly to the 30S subunit of bacterial ribosomes, inhibiting protein synthesis and resulting in bactericidal activity. The combination exploits potential synergistic effects against certain multidrug-resistant bacteria, particularly in patients with cystic fibrosis experiencing pulmonary exacerbations due to Pseudomonas aeruginosa[2][4]. This regimen is typically reserved for severe or hospital-acquired infections where monotherapy may be insufficient.
