Tick-borne encephalitis purified antigen (formaldehyde inactivated) is an **inactivated whole-virus tick-borne encephalitis vaccine antigen** used for active immunization against tick-borne encephalitis, a flaviviral infection that can cause severe central nervous system disease. The antigen consists of purified tick-borne encephalitis virus propagated in chick embryo fibroblast cells and inactivated with formaldehyde; in marketed products such as TICOVAC it is formulated as a sterile suspension adsorbed to aluminum hydroxide. Its protective effect is mediated by presentation of non-replicating viral antigens to the immune system, inducing neutralizing antibody and adaptive immune responses against tick-borne encephalitis virus. This term describes the specific biologic vaccine antigen modality rather than a single unique branded product, and encompasses products such as TICOVAC and other purified formaldehyde-inactivated TBE vaccines.
